Meeting: nclug 2005-09-06
Body:

Caught up on slashdot and some other RSS feeds. Tried to help my uncle resolve some broken dependencies with FreeMind productivity tool. It looks like neat software, but someone needs to provide serious help to the rpm package maintainer. Suggesting to install with -nodeps in the FAQ instead of fixing the dependency list is just wrong... grrr.

Tried to fix a path/library problem with building pymedia. If I can get it working, it can theoretically provide a way to retrieve the length of an mp3 programatically. I plan on using this to help look for albums that I have duplicate copies of in ogg and mp3 format.

Modified my hibernate script so that it unloads the kernel usb drivers before acpi sleep and reloads them after resume. Fixed a problem with Fedora Core 4 and my Intel 830M chipset card (i810 driver) causing blank tty consoles after X is started by adding 'Option "VBERestore" "true"' to the video device section of my /etc/X11/xorg.conf file. Helped make plans for hackathon.

Meeting: nclug 2005-07-05
Body: I reinstalled my backup server over the weekend (FreeBSD 5.3 to CentOS 4.1), worked on reinstituting nightly backups on the rest of my systems. Tried to apply a patch to a FreeBSD router to fix up a problem with DMA_TIMEOUTS causing kernel panics, but though I could get the patch to apply, it wouldn't compile correctly. Built and installed a new FreeBSD kernel for that system with latest security updates applied, updated zebra package. Figured out what I was doing wrong in setting up the vpostmaster debian repository earlier today, tested the new 1.14 release on a testing system.

Meeting: nclug 2005-03-29
Body: Helped Andrea bring up her wireless. Pump wasn't working right and for some reason it kept dropping eth0 on fail. Set her up with a static IP instead. Sound seems to be broken on my system, but I can't rmmod any of the sound modules or find out which processes are trying to access the sound card. Finished writing a nagios plugin to extract SOA from a zone entry and check the date on it. Started building kernel on a FreeBSD router. Tried to finish up examples in "Learning Python", but the last one made use of jptyhon. I uninstalled j2re after a major security vulnerability was disclosed late last year. Track down the date to 11-24-2004, and Dag's most recent j2re package is more recent. Installed that, and hopefully I'll be able to get jptyhon installed soon.

Meeting: nclug 2004-11-30
Body: Located a patch to build the guest 2.6 kernel for user mode linux. Tried to figure out an issue with my crontab running jobs on UTC instead of localtime. Between all of the different time reporting/adjusting tools (date, hwclock, and redhat-config-date) and the fact that they sometimes showed different times when run as root than as my user, I don't know if I fixed it, but consider myself lucky to have been able to put things back to the time they were on before. Worked more on exercises from chapter 9 of Learning Python.
