Meeting: nclug 2006-06-06
Body: Got slightly abused by an employee of Pizza Casbah while we were there for dinner. Sad, really, because I love the pizza there, but it's hard for me to find a reason to go back. It's only a pizza joint, so I don't really expect them to have hiring procedures that would prevent it, but I would expect them to have someone on-site to manage it. I don't recall that I've ever seen anyone there that acted like a manager though.
At the meeting I mostly worked on the new "pybch" python benchmarking code. Also hoked about the guy at Pizza Casbah and how he tried to sell us a DVD player from his backpack, demonstrating how sturdy it was by throwing it repeatedly on our table. Made some progress on pybch before efm wanted to go home, she had a headache. Worked on it some more from home.

Chapter Name: nclug
Meeting: nclug 2005-12-27
Body: Made an htmlfill extension to JOTWeb and created a test form using it. htmlfill is a great Python module by Ian Bicking that will take HTML describing a form, and a dictionary of values and errors, and fill in the "value" fields, and also display any errors in the form. This will make the form paper-path in JOTWeb2 much easier to deal with. I tried helping efm with getting her rowing machine working under Linux, but didn't have much success. Kicked some ass at Katamari Deathmatch. Set up a Linux-HA cluster to test out Linux-HA version 2, but failed, possibly because of segfaults in the cluster resource manager.

Meeting: nclug 2005-10-04
Body: Moved the meeting to Mugs. Showing ant and dangerjim this part I had fabricated, after recent discussions about emachineshop. I didn't use emachineshop, but did recently check them out. They would have been pretty expensive and required very long lead times in comparison. Set up a gratuitous ARP to prevent a user who has a virus from hammering the uplink. Reading about NILFS, a new journaling filesystem put out by a telecom company in Japan. Trying that file-system on a test box I have. Sadly, I went through all this effort to set up the test system, and then found that the code for it is not downloadable, the site it's on is hosed.

Body: Writing some code to talk to the RS-232 interfaced multimeter. Wrote some Python code that reads samples periodically and writes them to syslog. As soon as the inductive current probe arrives, I'll be ready to build some rrdtool graphs of power usage in our house. Helped Roger get Atheros drivers working for his wireless card, it locked up the card when I ifconfiged the interface though. Got the wireless card I have with Prism54 chipset working on his box though. He had copied over the MadWiFi source via a FAT file-system, so the files were all renamed lower-case, which caused "make install" to fail since there was now an "install" file that was up to date. Listened to some morcheeba that dangerjim sent over to me. Pretty cool. Creating a 700GB backup partition on the backup server at home.

The driver is zd1211. Writing a couple of e-mails I have to finish tonight. Chatting with the various people. Trying to figure out if I started using google in 1996 or 1998, I'm pretty sure it was 1996, but the google corporate history seems to imply that it started in 1998, but that talks about Menlo Park, and I know I started using it when it was still at Stanford. Trying another install of Ubuntu over PXE, it seems to be working now.

Body: Talking about thermodynamics. Yes, on purpose. Building a new Postfix RPM with PostgreSQL support enabled. Talking to Kevin about FC4 with his setup, and Brian about Ubuntu/Kbuntu. Contemplating switching to Ubuntu so that I don't have to do big upgrades every once in a while, but doing regular smaller upgrades. Could possibly get the same from Debian, though I suspect setting up the average desktop would be more work to do in Debian. Re-installing FC4 on a test box so I can test vPostMaster on it, again. Hopefully the last test. Got FC4 vPostMaster working. Looking over some portable audio players with Brian, he found a bunch that will play Ogg. Cool.

Meeting: nclug 2005-06-07
Body: Playing with Taggart's bluetooth mouse. Trying to reproduce a problem reported with Python, but ran out of disc space. Ugh. The problem is with a >2GB tar file with more than 3 million entries. Creating that many empty files was an issue. I guess I'll have to try on a machine with more space. Good thing I have a few of those. Chatting with everyone. We're trying to announce a route that someone else is giving to us, but it's not getting advertised to our peers because they are announcing that route to us.
